It’s definitely virus season now, and lots of people across the hemisphere have been extremely ill with all sorts of pathogens over recent months. Coronavirus, RSV, parainfluenza, influenza and other viruses are all making the rounds, with devastating effects on our homes and workplaces. Everyone knows lots of people who are coughing, sneezing, missing work or irritable today.
Many people have respiratory problems even before winter brings on the viruses. Their wheezing, coughing, poor sleep and exhaustion are made worse by the viral infections. The old treatments (bronchodilators and other inhalers, steroids) really don’t cut it when asthmatics catch a bad virus. Fatigue, cough and wheezing can last for many weeks, causing problems even after the infection is long gone.
Scientists have been hard at work trying to find out how asthma works, and the mechanisms that they have turned up will eventually lead to new therapies to better treat it.
